Recently, Meta suspended the 1.4 million-follower Instagram account of Saleh Aljafarawi, who is well-known for his purported involvement as a crisis actor for Hamas. On the forum, Aljafarawi had been posting contentious images and videos that claimed to depict the aftermath of Israeli attacks on Gaza.

Aljafarawi was seen joking and laughing in a recent Instagram story that was uploaded just hours before the suspension, casting doubt on the veracity of his statements. He has since reappeared on a backup account with a sizable 32,000 user base, in spite of the suspension.

Who is Saleh Aljafarawi?

Social media star Saleh Aljafarawi is well-known for his role in spreading propaganda films endorsing the violent Hamas organisation, which is situated in the Gaza Strip. His actions have garnered notice, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has widened the gulf in opinion around the globe.

Aljafarawi has been charged with putting together recordings to influence public opinion, mainly by making up tales of civilian casualties and making himself out to be an Israeli attack victim.

Aljafarawi, who was raised in Gaza, has become well-known due to his online persona, especially on TikTok and Instagram. He has come under fire for reportedly helping to disseminate false material and skewed narratives, which has complicated the information war centred on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

His actions have raised concerns about the manipulation of social media to shape public opinion and the challenges of discerning authentic information in a highly polarized environment.

His purported use of staged scenes and emotional manipulation has added to the complexities of understanding the ground realities of the conflict. As his influence grew, so did the scrutiny of his actions, leading to his Instagram account suspension.

Hamas massacre crisis

After Hamas fighters invaded Israel early on October 7, social media was overrun with images and videos allegedly depicting the fighting, making it challenging for viewers worldwide to distinguish reality from fiction.

Many testimonies of the subsequent carnage and authentic images have surfaced, however, they have been mixed in with individuals who are spreading misinformation and distorting films from earlier incidents.

Among the lies that users have spread are rumors that a senior Israeli commander was abducted, a bogus video that purported to be a BBC News story, and outdated, irrelevant videos of Russian President Vladimir Putin with erroneous English captions.

The video is from 2020 and the version currently circulating online features incorrect English captions. The footage actually shows Kim celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Korean Workers’ Party; he doesn’t reference the conflict in the Middle East or Biden at any point.

In the misleading video circulating online, the English captions claim Kim says: “Under the Biden administration, conflicts erupt yearly. This year a war begins between Israel and Palestine.”

“I’m afraid that if the Biden admin does not cease to exist in the next election, World War 3 may begin,” the captions continue. “Who knows what next year’s war will be. I support Donald Trump for President in 2024. Good Luck to Mr. Trump.”

The video was shared on Instagram and TikTok, where one post garnered more than 223,000 likes.

However, the video is old and the captions are completely inaccurate.

Clips and images from the same speech can be seen in news reports from October 2020 about an event celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Korean Workers Party.
