Larry Nassar is a former USA Gymnastics national team doctor and osteopathic physician who gained international notoriety for sexually abusing hundreds of young female gymnasts under the guise of medical treatment.

Nassar worked with USA Gymnastics for nearly 30 years, including four Olympic Games, and also served as a faculty member at Michigan State University.

The abuse scandal came to light in 2016 when former gymnast Rachael Denhollander filed a complaint against Nassar, accusing him of sexual abuse. This opened the floodgates for numerous other survivors to come forward and share their experiences. In total, more than 500 women and girls accused Nassar of abuse, including prominent Olympic gymnasts such as Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, and McKayla Maroney.

In 2017, Nassar pleaded guilty to federal child pornography charges and was sentenced to 60 years in federal prison. He also faced state-level charges in Michigan, where he pleaded guilty to sexually abusing minors. In January 2018, Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison on seven counts of criminal sexual conduct. Later that same year, he received an additional 40 to 125 years in prison on three more counts.

The case led to a widespread reckoning within USA Gymnastics and other sports organizations, as well as Michigan State University, regarding the handling of sexual abuse allegations and the protection of athletes.

It exposed significant failures in safeguarding young athletes and the silencing of survivors. The fallout from the Nassar case prompted numerous resignations and reforms within USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University and sparked broader conversations about the culture of abuse in elite sports.

The survivors of Nassar’s abuse have been instrumental in advocating for justice and raising awareness about the issue of sexual abuse in sports. Their courage and resilience have helped bring about important changes in policies and procedures to prevent similar abuses from occurring in the future.
