The Walking Dead is a post-apocalyptic horror TV series based on the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. The show follows a group of survivors who struggle to stay alive in a world overrun by zombies, or "walkers", as well as other hostile human groups. One of the characters who has been part of the show since season 8 is Alden, played by Callan McAuliffe. But who is Alden in The Walking Dead? And what is his fate? In this article, we will explore Alden's background, personality, relationships, and role in the story. ## Alden's Background and Personality According to the Walking Dead Wiki, Alden was a worker for the Saviors, a group of extortionists led by Negan, who terrorized the other communities in exchange for half of their supplies and crops. Alden was part of a group of Saviors who attacked the Hilltop Colony, a farming community led by Maggie Rhee, in season 8. However, the attack was repelled by the Militia, a coalition of survivors from Alexandria, the Kingdom, and the Hilltop, who fought back against the Saviors. Alden and several other Saviors surrendered and were taken as prisoners by the Militia. Unlike most of his fellow Saviors who tended to have a rough and often violent nature, Alden was level-headed and tended to avoid bloodshed if he could help it, shown when he immediately surrendered to the Militia and talked his fellow men into doing the same instead of starting more violence. In the makeshift prison at Hilltop, he deliberately bumped Jared and told him to not cause any more trouble after already risking their lives twice with escape attempts. Alden appeared to take up a leadership role with the Savior prisoners, attempting to negotiate with Maggie on their behalf. In return, Maggie appeared to treat Alden as the leader of the prisoners and showed him a level of respect that many of the others didn't receive. As he spent more time as a prisoner of the Militia, Alden became more and more disillusioned with the Saviors and Negan, and more sympathetic to the Militia and their cause. He even offered to help the Militia fight against the Saviors, but Maggie refused, fearing a betrayal. However, Alden proved his loyalty when he warned Maggie about a Savior attack on the Hilltop, and helped defend the community from the invaders. He also helped bury the dead and tend to the wounded, earning the trust and gratitude of the Hilltop residents. After the war ended with the defeat of the Saviors, Alden chose to remain at the Hilltop and help build up the community, rather than return to the Sanctuary, the former base of the Saviors. He also renounced his allegiance to Negan and the Saviors, and adopted a new name, Al, to signify his new identity. He became a productive and valued member of the Hilltop, working as a blacksmith and a construction foreman. He also developed a friendship with Enid, a young medic and a former member of Rick Grimes' group. ## Alden's Relationships and Role Alden had several relationships with other characters on the show, some of which were friendly, some of which were hostile, and some of which were romantic. Here are some of the most notable ones: - Maggie Rhee: Alden and Maggie had a complicated relationship, as they started off as enemies, then became allies, and then became friends. Maggie was initially distrustful and hostile towards Alden, as he was a Savior and a prisoner. However, she gradually warmed up to him, as he showed his sincerity and willingness to help. She also respected his leadership and negotiation skills, and listened to his advice. Alden, in turn, admired Maggie's strength and courage, and trusted her to do the right thing. He also supported her decision to leave Hilltop and join Georgie, a woman who had offered her a chance to help build other communities. He also cared for her son, Hershel, whom he considered his nephew. - Enid: Alden and Enid had a romantic relationship, which began in the six years following Rick Grimes' assumed death. Enid was a young medic and a former member of Rick's group, who had lost her parents and her boyfriend, Carl, to the walkers. Alden and Enid bonded over their shared losses and their desire to help others. They also shared a passion for music, as Alden played the guitar and Enid sang. They became a couple and lived happily at the Hilltop, until their tragic fate at the hands of the Whisperers, a group of survivors who wore walker skins to blend in with the undead. The Whisperers decapitated several people, including Enid, and placed their heads on spikes to mark their territory. Alden was devastated by Enid's death, and vowed to avenge her. - Negan: Alden and Negan had a hostile relationship, as Negan was the leader of the Saviors and the enemy of the Militia. Negan was a ruthless and charismatic man, who ruled the Saviors with an iron fist and a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire, which he named Lucille. Negan used Lucille to brutally kill two of Maggie's friends, Glenn and Abraham, in front of the others, as a way of punishing them for attacking one of his outposts. He then declared that he was the new leader of all the communities and that they had to obey his rules or face the consequences. Alden was one of Negan's workers, who had to follow his orders and give him half of his supplies. However, Alden grew to hate Negan and his methods, and eventually defected to the Militia. He also renounced his name and his loyalty to the Saviors, and adopted a new name, Al, to signify his new identity. He also despised Negan for killing Enid, and wanted him to die. ## Alden's Fate Alden's fate was revealed in season 11 episode 9, titled "No Other Way". In this episode, we found out what happened after Maggie left Alden at the church in episode 3, where he was wounded by the Reapers, a group of elite soldiers who hunted down the survivors. Maggie returned to the church, but found Alden as a walker, crawling on the floor. She put him out of his misery by stabbing him in the head. According to Callan McAuliffe, the actor who played Alden, Alden did not die from his wounds, but from a Reaper who slit his throat. He also said that Alden managed to kill a Reaper before he died, showing his bravery and heroism. Alden's death was a shock and a loss for the fans, who had grown to love his character and his journey. He was a Savior turned hero, who proved his loyalty and his worth to the Hilltop and the other communities. He was also a friend and a lover, who cared for Maggie, Enid, and Adam.
