Sampha’s Bio

Sampha was born Sampha Lahai Sisay on November 16, 1988 in Morden, South London, United Kingdom. Her parents – Binty Sisay and Joe Sisay – were citizens of Sierra Leone who emigrated to London where Sampha and her four brothers were raised.

His family

The youngest of five brothers, Lahai lost his father, Joe, in 1998 to lung cancer at the age of nine. Shortly after, precisely in his late teens, his older brother suffered a stroke that left him physically disabled. While Sampha was busy trying to shape his music career and take care of his older brother, his mother was diagnosed with cancer.

Binty’s health fluctuated for quite a long time, leaving North Londer devastated and traumatized. Two years later, precisely in 2012, Sampha’s mother recovered, but it was only temporary, as her illness made a fatal return in 2014. She finally lost the battle against cancer in September 2015.

Binty’s passing would cause Laiha more pain and agony and even impact her album. Process which was at its base. It was actually difficult for Sampha, who was starting to pick herself up, taking on both family responsibilities and professional expectations, but after a while her wounds healed – but not completely.

Early career and success

British songwriter, singer and record producer Sampha Sisay began his musical career as a child after his father brought home a piano that he spent hours fiddling with. By the age of three, Laiha had already honed her piano skills and was doing well.

At twelve, the London-born beat-maker was introduced to Cubase editing software by one of his brothers. From then on, the Sampha brothers fed their ears with sounds from The Clash, Groove Armada, James Brown and Herbie Hancock. Sanie Sisay was a major influence of all her brothers. He was a music producer at the time and owned a mini-studio in his apartment next door.

The British singer’s first song, The Promise of God, which he intertwined with faith was written as a form of relief from his heavy emotions and depression.

Sampha briefly studied music production at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, located in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He dropped out of the course and returned to London, as he was offline.

Upon his return, the Sundanza hitmaker met SBTRKT, a music project run by Aaron Jerome, through MySpace, a social networking website. Soon after, SBTRKT passed on his revered creativity to the London star who ended up releasing a few songs and touring with him.

Sampha tasted another dimension of popularity when he began collaborating with Canadian rapper, singer-songwriter Aubrey Drake Graham and was featured in his viral song Too Much (released in 2013).

Drake got to know Sampha who made music as a grime MC and producer under the name Kid Nova after receiving his first two solo EPs Sundanza (released in 2010) and Double (released in 2013) from record producer popular Kwes.
