Matthew Louis Gaetz II, born on May 7, 1982, is an American lawyer and Republican politician who has represented Florida’s 1st congressional district in the United States House of Representatives since 2017. The district covers areas of Walton County and all of Escambia, Okaloosa, and Santa Rosa counties. Gaetz is widely known for his staunch support of far-right politics and former President Donald Trump.

Raised in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Gaetz is the son of former Florida State Senator Don Gaetz and the grandson of North Dakota politician Jerry Gaetz. After earning a Bachelor of Science in interdisciplinary sciences from Florida State University in 2003, Gaetz graduated from William & Mary Law School in 2007 with a Juris Doctor. He was admitted to the Florida Bar on February 6, 2008, and briefly worked in private practice before running for state representative.

Gaetz served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2010 to 2016, where he became nationally recognized for defending Florida’s “stand-your-ground law.” He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016, and has been reelected in 2018, 2020, and 2022. In October 2021, Gaetz was suspended from practicing law by the Florida Bar due to unpaid fees.
