Ingrid Newkirk (born June 11, 1949) is the president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the world’s biggest animal rights organisation. She is an English-born British/American animal rights campaigner. Making Kind Choices (2005) and The PETA Practical Guide to Animal Rights – Simple Acts of Kindness to Help Animals in Trouble are two of her publications (2009). Since 1972, Newkirk has been involved in the animal rights movement. Legislation to establish the first spay/neuter clinic in Washington, D.C., as well as an adoption programme and public funding of veterinary services, was passed under her leadership as the District of Columbia’s first female poundmaster in the 1970s, earning her recognition as one of Washington’s “ Washingtonians of the Year” in 1980. PETA was established by Newkirk and fellow animal rights activist Alex Pacheco in March 1980. Pacheco photographed 17 macaque monkeys being experimented on within the Institute of Behavioral Research in Silver Spring, Maryland, in 1981, during what became known as the Silver Spring monkeys case. The case resulted in the first police raid on an animal research facility in the United States, as well as an amendment to the Animal Welfare Act in 1985. Since then, Newkirk has led efforts to end animal testing in crash tests, persuaded businesses to cease testing cosmetics on animals and pressed the meat sector for better welfare standards, and conducted undercover investigations that resulted in government penalties against companies.
