Bernard Henry Kroger (January 24, 1860 – July 21, 1938) founded the Kroger supermarket company in the United States. Moreover, he was a forerunner in the supermarket industry, pioneering self-service shopping in 1916.

Instead of waiting for a delivery, he let customers enter his stores, shop, and take the merchandise home with them. Kroger was the first to introduce in-store bakery and meat counters, and Kroger supermarkets were the first to offer fresh baked goods, meat, and groceries under one roof. He and his grocery store chain survived the stock market crash of 1929, thanks in part to the founding of his bank. He and Jeno Paulucci, the founder of Chun King foods, ran profitable food businesses.

When the proprietors declined to make Kroger a partner, he put his life savings of $372 into a grocery store at 66 Pearl Street in downtown Cincinnati with a partner who had borrowed $350. An unexpected overnight flood destroyed the business in 1884, and the partners opened a new one.

Kroger had purchased and opened over 5,500 stores by the end of the 1920s. Kroger was a pioneer in mixing grocery shops and bakeries, and he later expanded his retail grocery store idea to include formerly standalone butcher markets. Kroger is to be praised.

In December 1927, Kroger sold the company to a Wall Street financial consortium led by Lehman Brothers. On January 31, 1928, he resigned as president of the Kroger Company. Kroger’s business was built on a single tenet: “Be precise.” Never sell anything that you wouldn’t desire.
